AFCI Seminar for Fire Investigators

Forensic engineer Rick Franklin developed a 30-minute AFCI Seminar based on work with the circuit breaker industry he did (pro bono) to convince them to improve their products. Rick has presented portions of this seminar to the Department of Defense, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), the Square-D Corporation, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the Electronics Industries Association, the Florida Arson Convention, AT&T, and numerous claims offices. The Cleveland Claims Organization called this their "best presentation ever."

Highlights

  • Watch flying copper globules ignite three blankets before the circuit breaker pops.
  • Learn exactly how defects in electrical insulation can lie dormant for months or years until an arc occurs one day to cause a fire.
  • See a demonstration of magnetic trip levels in common circuit breakers.
  • Learn how to rule out some copper melts from being the cause of a fire.
  • See the inner parts of an Arcing Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI).
  • Learn why 15 and 20 ampere vehicle fuses often do not prevent fires, but 10 ampere fuses usually do.
